Back in the 1980s, Misha (which translates to bear in Russian) was the most popular children’s magazine in India published in English. Within its glossy pages, you were treated to folk tales, science fiction, riddles, photographs,
pen pal sections, puzzles and illustrations. As an added bonus, it smelled awfully good. Unfortunately the collapse of the USSR spelled death for many Soviet publishing houses (Raduga, Mir and others) and Misha soon became extinct. For years I searched for magazine back issues in second hand stalls all over Bombay finding a tattered copy every once in a while. Even expert book sellers who run bazaars such as the ones in the Fountain area hadn’t heard of the magazine. In the beginning of 2003, I found a man on the footpath in Dadar T.T. (next to the fly over) selling old novels and as I have a nose that is particularly sensitive to valuable and out-of-print literature, I spotted or rather, sniffed a stack of Mishas containing several issues that had been published through the 80s and 90s.
The moment was, needless to say, exhilarating. At that time I had 120 rupees with me, (roughly the equivalent of 2.5 dollars). I offered the man 100 rupees and he happily gave me the stack without making me resort to haggling. Even If I’d had a 100 dollars, I’d still have given it all to him. The seller had no idea how rare the magazines he was selling were. They were moreover in excellent condition with barely a few creases here and there. No dog eared pages, no silver-fish damage or greasy stains. I really have no idea how much the magazines are worth and don’t plan on ever selling them. For those of you keen on obtaining actual copies, I only have one word of advice- persevere. You never know when you might strike gold. As one of the commentors aptly mentioned, famous second-hand book sellers may not have the rare gems decaying in smaller, more perishable establishments. Before I conclude, I request you to not entreat me to send you a physical copy of the magazine as some have-I do not need your money nor your gifts. Some things just cannot be bought, no matter how trite that sounds.
Update (December 5, 2008) : Thanks to Javi, the Argentinian guy who commented on this post, I will be using ISSUU as a platform for upoading MISHA. It’s fast, convenient and makes for easy reading online by allowing a magazine format. The September 1987 copy is a little tattered as can be seen from the scan. I assure you that most of the other magazines in my possession are in a far better condition considering their age and the abuse wrought on them by the elements of nature and careless vendors.

I havent read any Misha magazines but as a child I read a lot of beautifully illustarted Raduga publication’s children’s books. I still treasure the ones left with me. I used to wonder why you dont get them anymore, not even in bookfairs. I will try and get my hands on some Misha magazines. Are they by any chance available on the net?
i had one copy at home.My dad used to buy all those Russian books and magazines and preserve them.But by the time i could read only one copy was left of Misha.many copies went missing.I really liked the magazine but didn’t know its name.the cover page was torn.It was a unique magazine.The pages were really cool and the illustrations were funny.At the back the pen pal section was there.There was one more magazine called Soviet Desh in Assamese language.I still have a few copies at home.Besides all these there were some awesome children books published by raduga prakashan.Alas many of these books are not available now.I have read many children books but none of them can be compared to their Russian counterparts.I miss those days.I have kept those books safely and even now I take them out from my bookshelf and enjoy reading them like good old days.I have been looking for a book where the main protagonist’s name is Shiskine and Vitya(i am not sure if the spelling is correct).I have the translated one .I couldnt find any english translation till now.Its good to see I am not the only one who misses the golden era of Raduga prakashan and former USSR.

The only place they are available is on E Bay. There was one seller who was offering 10 copies for 28 + 20 dollars but 8 of them were in Russian. I would suggest that you carefully search in used book stores. You never know when you’ll get lucky.

A friend of mine and I were having this discussion on books and discovered we both read Misha as kids. This is what prompted me to look it up on the net. It’s great to know there are so many people out there who loved the magazine as well

it really took me away from the reality to a world full of colour and stories, games, puzzle…
unfortunately, when we left home, we left all our belongings there so i guess my relatives must have sold it to the first kabariwala to get few paise…

Hi, I am so thrilled to find an entire community of Misha fans! I read Misha as a kid but – sadly never subscribed to it. At the time I remember my Dad used to buy them for Rs.1 each! I’m so glad you found some Mishas. I am so tempted to go look for them in second hand bookstores immediately! I have some other Russian books – a Russian book of fairy tales and a Russian children’s book – both in English – which I treasure. But I really love Misha and wish I could lay my hands on some of its old copies.

Reading inputs from babayaga threw me back in time when I used to be a subscriber for Misha in the 80’s. As a chiled I woule wait for the postman to come with the international post! I have never come across any other mag like Misha yet. I would urge babayaga to publish those mags online or find some other way to share it with all of us Misha fans please. And yes I will definetely look for this one in the sunday book market on footpaths in lanes of Old hyderabad. (me from hyd)..take care and cherish the good old days…

Wonderful to know that there’s a community of us here that grew up reading misha!
I remember rushing to the book exhibitions every year in delhi, to catch my latest editions. Alongwith my indrajals and amar chitra kathas, they were my favourite reads as a kid. Actually, before i gave them all away, i must have had around 50 or more mishas, and many other russian children’s books and fairytales.
I too have been searching for them everywhere for the last few years. I’ve looked in bombay, calcutta, madras, lucknow, bangalore and delhi, and was able to find only one tattered copy in calcutta, whcih is hardly even recognizable (i think it must have been homeless during the rains). However, without even looking for them, i did find some amazing old russian illustrated sci-fi from the 50s and other russian miscellanea in king’s circle, bombay, which is imho an underrated, but much better source for rare finds than fountain (atleast was 4 years back).
Baba Yaga, you must have been very lucky to find what you did!
Ok, this is a humble request to all you guys out there with copies. Please try to up some anywhere on the web, so us not-so-lucky diggers can also float in some sweet nostalgia…:)
If you don’t know how to do it, let me know. I’ll try to link you to a good tutorial or two. Of course, you’ll need access to a reasonably good scanner.

MISCHA i have spent months tryign to find them i wuz very young as a kid and still remember them as being the first set of books i acctually loved reading man i miss those boks some times i believe i wuz born into the wrong decade i want to be a 70’s child not 80’s oh the soviet union adn the cold war the simple life lol

Im another Misha fan…. My mama-ji subscribed me this magazine… and i have got many issues with me tilll now. I restored all the torn pages / covers.

There was something about those illustrations in that magazine which inspired me a lot for too many reasons.

I read Misha as a kid, my parents had subscribed it for me.At that time, I didnt know anyone else who read it which led me to believe I was probably the only subscriber.
Until many years later, in collge, I came across a couple of friends who were also Misha fans.And now, to come across this post and to realise that there were people all over the world reading this while growing up, its just wonderful.
For the sake of timelessness and pricelessness, I wish someone fortunate enough to still have some copies scans them.Would love to have atleast the scanned copies.Its one of the “happy places” in my mind.

I’m from Slovakia and I’ve been buying this mag regularly as a basics school pupil from 1986 to 1989. Absolutely loved it! AFAIK USSR has been exporting it mainly abroad to schools where kids were studying Russian language.
Unfortunately when I grew up a bit I needed space in our appartment, with me not having my own room, and my mom decided to get rid of stacked old magazines – and so 4 volumes of MISHA ended in paper scrap collection service. Now I’m sorry for it as these magazines were part of my childhood and I could spare at least few issues.
I can only guess what would some enthusiast collectors pay for these 4 volumes.
Surely, you will be doing such a huge serivce to so many people by proving e-copies to the interested readers. Everytime I think of it, it makes me so emotional.

Thanks for scanning and uploading the copy of Misha. You are indeed lucky to have been able to get your hands on those magazines. I have been trying for ages and no luck. I used to have some of the books, that somehow got wet, and rotted completely with mildew and stuff. It was very kind of you to upload the scanned version to share them with other people like me. I can’t express how happy I was to be able to look at it. My eyes scanned greedily at every single image and word, even the staple pin marks. Those books represent the best part of my childhood summer vacations in India.
Anyways, I don’t know how we would work out the logistics, but you say you are swamped.. So if you need any help scanning and uploading them, let me know, I would more than glad to help.

i really had no idea that so many persons had read misha . i read them as a child n still remember the colourful n glazed pages. as a child reading misha was like a journey to wonderland. even now as i write i m overcome by nostalgia, the feeling is simply overwhelming. i m glad that people still miss the little bear(misha).

It’s not only MISHA but all the russian books that i got with me. No doubt this was among the best Children leterature. I still miss some books, that i got to read but could not buy. but since USSR got break up it’s impossible to find these books unless from personal collection. Luckily i belong Jaipur and one of the two offices of Raduga Publications happens to be in Jaipur. But they are also left with medical/Engineering books and some literature of Gorky, Tolstoy etc. Would like to buy the books from personal collection if someone wants to relinquish.

I had some very good moments with this magazine as this was my first one which made me a avid reader right from my fifth grade in Kendriya Vidyalaya where my library has a great collections of Russian Bedtime story books and now i am searching the same for my 4 year old kid.
Happy to find what I always wanted, but found never. My kid should know what I read in my childhood and what they are missing now!

I am another “MISHA” lover from Romania. Those magazines were simply great, especially for that period of time. I was re-reading them the other day and wondered how come that the Soviet Union allowed this magazine be published. And how come that the other communist countries allowed it to “penetrate” their territories.
Besides beautiful illustrations, many nations’ folk stories and really smart, intercultural approach, “MISHA” was connecting its readers to the capitalist world by sharing all kind of information from countries such as Sweden or the UK etc. Plus, they were a medium for pen-friend-linking, which again amazed me taking into account that at least in my country corresponding or having relations to foreigners was very unusual and frustrating. The Communist intelligence service was controlling everything and having any kind of suspect relations to foreigners could have sent you to jail in no time.
What do you think about these things? Was it only my country in this situation? Even if it was the only one, why do you think that they did allow “MISHA” to be read by Romanians as well?
I would have the curiosity to talk to Romanians that were able (or weren’t they?) to have foreign pen-friends established through “MISHA”. I would also like to know what happened to “MISHA” and when they ceased to publish the magazine. My mother cannot remember.
“MISHA” was an extraordinary magazine for those times and especially in that political context. It now realize that it was very strange. Its brilliance would be welcomed also today, when children do not have such smart magazines anymore.
I wrote a lot, sorry. I miss my childhood, with “MISHA” being an interesting aspect of it.

Thanks for sharing. It is evident that Misha meant a whole lot to you, as it did to thousands the world-over. It is interesting that Misha wasn’t monitored by the authorities; so in a way, the magazine played its role against communist repression by bringing children from around the world together. And yes, the feeling of having lost something precious and fragile is palpable for us, readers of Misha and children of the you-value-the-little-you-have generation. Do feel free to post again anytime you want and don’t worry, your voice will be heard here.

oh my god!! i can’t believe my eyes..i used to read them as a kid and had this crazy habit of cutting out the pictures from the pages and collecting them!! the magazine was truly entertaining for me and i would wait eagerly everytime for its delivery. my sis and i would always fight about wanting to read it first and never did it occur that we could read it together!!:P sadly, i don’t have the magazines or the pictures now :(. amongst all the other books that were published back then, Misha is the only one that managed to steal my heart!! Thanks a million to you babayaga for posting them online. i can’t even tell u how ecstatic i am rite now about finding your blog!!

hi friends, i naver read this magzine, but i read many soviet books(translated in hindi).i have many books of mir publication, raduga , pragati prakasak.i am trying to scan and upload on net.1 more thing i have 2 copy of soviet magazine called soviet bhoomi. if you want some soviet books , then find th ecommunist centre in your city and ask for the books related to communist.because after 1990 russia send many books include children book,magazine in indian coomunist party centre. 1 more thing people publishing house (new delhi) and rajshthan people publishing house have many soviet books translated in hindian and english. if you r going in book fair then go to people publishing house stall and pls buy those book, and try to keep alive soviet book.
Thanks so much for scanning these magazines. Just today, I was writing a post on my blog about a little library that me and brother used to run in summer vacations while growing up in the 80s and Misha was one of the offerings in our librarr. They used to have a centrespread in each issue and I remember one gorgeous spread of the three musketeers. I had it cut out and was hanging opposite the mirror in front of our sink, so that everyday I brushed my teeth I could see that picture in the mirror. Thanks again for all the memories and if you find the three musketeeres paintaing I will be indebted for life.

Why upset? You seem to have more issues of Misha than me. 😀 I bought these issues in a similar situation. I had 100 rupees with me and bought them for Rs. 5 each! I’ve already scanned 8 of them for my blog, which is illustration/art-oriented. Here’s the link for the scans again.

Yes, I remember Misha. I should be 2 or 3 years old when we subscribed it, i barely knew any english alphabets then… but the pictures and photos of this magazine is simply amazing… I also remember many story and science books from Raduga and MIR.
Vasili Mitrokhin Archive reveals KGB’s extensive penetration of governments throughout the Third World-the battlefield on which the U.S.S.R. sought to achieve global supremacy. India happens to be one of it. If I am not wrong circulating soviet published books to Third World countries to potray U.S.S.R as a heroic is a part of that propaganda too…
Anyway keeping that aside, I have some excellent memories of this magazines.
I am a Misha fan too. Wow I never realised how many Indians and other non-Russians loved Misha. Please please tell me where I can read them online. And Rohufish you are one lucky guy to get all those magazines. I gave my entire collection to my cousins. Do not know if they still have them.

I have a kid now and when I tell her the stories , I remembered misha and such nice stories in them and now I miss it. I feel nostalgic thinking of those days at the beginning of the month when I would be restless waiting for the postman to pull out that one folded Misha with a brown paper address wrapper down its middle.

I am thrilled, really. After more than 3 years from my first experience with internet, only today i Googled for MISHA, my sweet childhood friend. I am amazed at finding the blog, reading the entries and instantly felt connected to you guys.
I was happy to know there are so many people around who have read Misha as a child – like me.
I still remember those days of early 80’s , when postman brings those large envelops.
We used to see those beautiful illustrations, trying to decipher the stories from the images (I was able to read and write Bengali then,but no English )and waiting eagerly for our father’s return.
In the evening, sitting upon my father’s lap , I used to hear the stories of distant lands.
After the fall of USSR , the mag suddenly stopped to arrive. Before than nobody in our family cared about preserving the old issues, my elder brother used them to make cover of his exercise books (pity).
In the new millennium, I found many childhood book i loved to read in college street (Kolkata) , but not a single issue of Misha.
I do have 5 or 6 English issues still left 🙂 which i am going to upload within a couple of week so that anyone can download them . It is a small return of favor for the people who have shared so much resource and knowledge in the internet.
(I have to spent one Saturday scanning the issue in my office as i have no scanner).
I will provide the download link here.Suggestion about any free uploading site is welcome.

i can’t helping feeling like the set of Mishas whose photo you have posted were once mine. i used to have the exact same issues in perfect condition before my mom threw them away when e moved . my favourite on was the one in the middle with the snow scenery and the boy on the sledge. Recollection of lost childhood artifacts can be painful.
I am so touched to see this. My mom used to buy Misha for me. I have been married for 4 years now and during the course of a conversation with my hubby, I discovered we both read Misha as kids. From then on, we have been dying to get our hands on one copy so that my lil daughter can read the comic I read as a child.

Wow, that’s a lot of MISHA lovers..my kind. I am from Bangalore and have read a lot of MISHA magazines in the 80’s. Now that my daughter is 4+ years old, I decided that she should get to read some magazines and the first magazine that came to my mind was MISHA. It is thrilling and great to know that I can turn to somebody (or somewhere on the internet) for those books. I am more than pleased to read and show those precious books to my daughter.

My Grand father used to subscribe and bring it to me every time.
I remember a guy launching a small toy rocket in one of those pages,

I read most of the MISHA books along with other RUSSIAN (translated to ENGLISH – MIR PUBLICATIONS) and those were the times when INDIA had very good tie-ups with USSR (when RAKESH SHARMA went into SPACE along with other RUSSIAN’s, both the countries exchanged CULTURAL ACTIVITIES). there were couple of local publication / book store distributors who came to my fathers office (SINGARENI COLLERIES COMPANY LIMITED, KOTHAGUDEM, KHAMMAM DISTRICT, ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA) requesing them to subscribe for these books. i used to get most of the SCIENCE books through VISALANDHRA PUBLICATIONS. those were the xlnt times, days and books, is there any way i can subscribe online or atleast download in some format……. please……………………..
wow ! Misha was my favorite when i was a kid. I have quite a few copies which i have preserved carefully … It gives me lot of joy and makes me nostalgic, when i glance thru them, probably once in a year or so, when i’m cleaning my old bookshelf …

i used to love reading MISHAs as a kid. Like you’ve said.. it was high quality paper and lovely colours. The stories was good too and there was a page that taught basic russian. You are quite lucky to have got hold of the big stack!!!

I really feel ashamed of loosing so many copies of misha so like you,, my father subscribed for this golden book, and i use to read that every now and then those days my mom use to use those book papers for our shelf, Safe and to all the places where she can use those precious papers. nobody even know that they will loose the book so quickly, i really cried bitterly when my dad told me that misha is no longer gona publish(as b’coz of the USSR separation) my father and i tried preserving those copies but i was totally utilized by my lovable mom. and trust me when i happen to saw the books in htis web site i cried out. i really have no words to tell you how much i miss those books… trust me i dont have the habit of reading books but misha is the only book i red and that is gona be the book i am gona miss in my life time,

I used to read Misha magazine when I was kid. Let me share with you something. At those time(around 1985) Misha came also in regional version(especially in Bengali). I have some copies in home in both english and bengali. Even today when I read the magazines I become very nostalgic.
If you remember at that time Russia got remarkable achievements in Space programme . And all the little scientific details was published very lucidly in that magazine.

I have read & re- read Misha so many times that even after 25 (read them in 1983) years i remember them. And now when my son is 3 year old…i wish i had all my childhood stock. My father had subscribed it for my elder brother (as i was just 4 year at that time) when we were in Ajmer, India, Asia. Today when I was searching for children books in Crossword “MISHA” just ran through my memories. We had preserved the magazines till i was 10yrs but then we had shift to new place & leave our old stock behind. Those were best kids magzine available those days…or would be the best even today!!
My dad got some copies of MISHA when he was on a trip to Moscow. I have some copies preserved with me. I remember the folk tales, paper toy how-to-do’s, comics and chess section.
Oh My God!! I remember those. My mom had subscribed those for my brother and me to read. But many of them got lost on the way, thanks to undependable Indian Postal service of those days. I loved those. I was a little kid back then and hadn’t learned to read English, so my mom used to read it out to us.

I have read Misha in my early childhood… It was highly adorable and the perfect children’s magazine of its time… No other magazine was a match to its quality of print, pages and the collection of stories and the photographs.. I still have a few copies with me… I wish this magazine to come back again to its life…

i remember the days when the new misa editions arrived and the brilliant colours ,glossy look and smell .At that time with only one tv channel on black and white no video games and still no study presssure the feeling was out off the world for a kid . Same for the tin tin comics .
Well I loved Misha too. But with time forgot it totally.I think I have some copies , will write in this blog if I can rummage through old stuff.
Please allow me to share how I reached this blog.
Now I have a 3 yrs old son for whom I wanted the similar stuff with which I grew up.
I searched for many story books in bookstores but I couldn’t find the finesse & quality in them with which I seemed to have
read & enjoyed. So I started searching for ‘those old books’. (Well they were cheap too 🙂 )
Sadly it seems we don’t have them now.Raduga & Mir are gone.)
Thats when I stumbled here & was surprised by the popularity of Misha.
My Dad never throws my stuff away. So I might just have it.

Hi admin, if you remember during those there was a magazine named SOVIET SANGH in hindi and it used to sold with MISHA the children book. I had read them almost on continuos basis.But same story, after independence they discontinued them.If u can upload any issue it will be heartening to revive memories.

Hi! to all the readers of Misha magazine. it was such a wonderful magazine. Misha is the first thing I remember when I recollect my childhood days. The magazine was very colorful with good quality of oil prints, excellent stories, superb pictures.
I use to receive it half folded and wrapped in a brown paper strip with my house address on it.
Every new edition, I use to keep the book next to me on my bed while sleeping, use to carry it to the school till the book gets little older.
I should have few editions in my home town, however need to search and keep them safe. They hold many memories with them.

Stumbled on this blog when googling for Misha, during an afternoon of laziness, trekking into long forgotten but so pleasant childhood days, filled with nostalgia. I used to be an avid reader of all the subsidized Soviet literature that was abundant in socialist India those days in the !980s – before so-called globalization gobbled up both India and the USSR.
Misha, folk tales from Azerbaizan, Moldova, Russian stories about their revolution, war with Napoleon, WWII – those were what I grew up with.

I’m a 90’s child through and through but I spent many post-Soviet era summers at my aunt’s house reading old issues of Misha discarded by older cousins. Seeing the photograph brought back so many memories! I wish my aunt hadn’t thrown away the old copies. Your story has given me hope though. I’m going to begin hunting them down too. 🙂

I remember growing up reading Misha. Wow, they were pretty good and thinking about it brings back old memories. I wish i find a collection of this magazine like you did. But then again, I may never travel back to India, so that would not be a possibility, sigh.

Hi… I grew up reading Misha..My dad used to get these for me and my sister Rinkoo. Was fascinated by its colourful pictures. Once i had got a gift of the patchwork Rose cloth flowers to be used on my dress from MISHA. I shall never forget how happy i was.

Some points that come to mind:
1. What a wonderful surprise to “meet” so many other lovers of Misha from all across the world!
2. I wonder what it says about the quality of literature available for kids nowadays that so many of us have made our way here not only reminiscing about our own childhood, but also wishing for something similar to the amazing Misha that we can in turn share with our own children.
3. Last but not least, I am more than a bit disappointed that those above who are boasting of having multiple copies of this treasured magazine in their possession haven’t taken the time or put in the effort to share the bounty with the rest of us who love Misha equally. As a guy who’s scanned and shared a fair few comics I can attest that it’s not all that difficult to at least do a basic scan and upload job, and if required there will be more than enough people who’ll offer to help with the editing. A measly 4 scans on Issuu are all I’ve been able to unearth so far (2 copies of March 1984 and 1 each of January 1986 and September 1987), and while the scanners and uploaders of these are real champs overall it’s a really sad state of affairs. If only I still had access to my collection it would have been a real pleasure and privilege to share the same with everyone who loves Misha as much as I do, and so I implore those with copies to share the joy with the rest of us, in return for our eternal thanks and those of our happy kids as well.

You are the luckiest person buddy, I had 5 copies of them which I had brought from my elder cousine. by the time i could read and write misha was shut. So I had to get pleased with whatever copies I had from my cousine. but in one rainy season all issues got drenched and my mom threw them away without my notice. I even lost some 100 issues of champak, 50 odd issues of tinkle and chandamama. But I missed misha the most. Its smell still refreshes me even after 20 years, its illustrations, photos, writings everything was sush a wow. I will definitely search all the old book vendors and see whether i too can grab a gold like you……

OMG!!! I am so glad to read this post!!! Finally someone who adored these magazines as much as i did. My first huge (and ironically American Teddy bear) was ofcourse solemnly named Misha and i changed the first consonant in memory of this magazine and named my daughter Tisha.
